Thick toenails

Thick toenails are often assumed to be caused by the growth of fungus under the toenails and in the toenail itself. In many cases, this assumption is correct, however there are other things that will make a toenail look thick and distorted - injury to the root of the nail can do it temporarily, while severe or repeated injury can permanently distort a nail. People who engage in sports such as soccer can experience this kind of damage.

Skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema will distort a nail as well if the area around the nails is affected. This is because thick toenails are really made up of dead skin cells that have been stacked together very tightly. Just as the skin becomes inflamed and irritated by a skin condition, the tissues around the root of the nail where the nail is produced become inflamed and this can be the cause of thick toenails.

Thick toenails are often associated with a toenail fungus. Usually toenails will develop other symptoms such as crumbling or brittleness in the nail, they might become thick, foggy, brittle, or perhaps gain a yellow or brown discoloring of the nail.

Best Ways to prevent thick toenail
If your toenails are thick as a result of a fungus there are some basic preventative measures you can take.

1. Make sure your shoes aren't too tight. Tight shoes can build up moisture causing fungus or can cause a thickening of the nail with irritation.

2. Wear sandals in public pool area, spas, locker rooms, and in public showers. Toenail fungus is often spread in moist public environments.

3. Make sure you do not cut your nails too short. Cutting your nails too short can lead to toenail fungus.

Effective Thick Toenail Treatments

Over the counter solutions are generally ineffective at treating thick toenails with fungus. The reason is because the treatment cannot get under the nail well. Overall these treatments are a big waste of money.

Prescription drug treatments for toenail fungus are dangerous, expensive, and more often than not prove ineffective. These drugs put toxins into the body possibly leading to liver damage.

One of the most effective ways to cure thick toenail fungus I've found was by using regular beer and dipping my infected nails into them for about 30 minutes per treatment twice a day. I combining this treatment with a natural treatment and gently file the nails so the treatment could be absorbed better.

Topical treatments for fungal thick toenail infections are often not very effective because they don't soak into thick toenails very well. The challenge is to get the nail as thin as possible and then apply a preparation that has superior ability to penetrate down through the layers and contact the fungus. Some commercially available natural essential oils and other topical products have been found to have better penetration qualities. These include Tea tree oil and other essential oils such as oregano oil. These and other natural remedies may be the home cures of the future for fungal nail infections.

Treating nail fungus with vicks

Treating nail fungus with vicks may be a sure fire way to avoid a case of "cold" feet but could this strange sounding home remedy really be effective at treating the stubborn bacteria that causes nail fungus? Treating nail fungus with vicks how does it work? This is a question that may not be answered adequately by most users of the vicks vapo rub. These are of course those who have used the treatment for many years and seen it work. It works through the active ingredient called Thymol. This is a molecule that affects the cell membrane of the bacteria or fungi and make it difficult for them to develop the roots that are required for them to develop a colony. Vicks vapo rub is one of the most popular home remedies. You need not go to a physician or pharmacists to get information on the use of this home solution. Just read a little more about it from the internet and also from the posting of the information sheet in the package. Causes And Preventive Measure For Toenail F...
