If the nail begins to grow sideways, then it will actually grow right into the skin until some care is given to stop it. If the cut becomes infected, then you have a more serious problem. The main issue with this is the pain in your toe will greatly intensify. If no care is given for the infection, then your toe may also face deformation and discoloration along with the intense pain. To prevent infection, you must take care of the problem as soon as possible, and try to keep it clean.

Preventive measures on how to Treat Ingrown Toenails

First, wipe your nail clippers with alcohol or betadine, especially its underside. Then pour two capfuls of betadine solution into half a gallon of warm water and soak your foot in the solution for ten minutes.

After drying your foot thoroughly, clip the ingrown toenails at a slight angle. Avoid cutting your skin by keeping the clipper bottom as close to the base of the nail plate as possible. Once you cut the nail, gently pull it out. Next, wipe the area gently using a cotton swab or gauze pad soaked in alcohol or betadine.

Supposing there is some bleeding after cutting your nail, just elevate the foot and apply an ice pack on the region for ten minutes. Use light pressure. However if there is excessive bleeding, it's better to consult a podiatrist

• Cut your toenails in such a style that its corners don't remain sharp (so that they won't cut into the skin therefore harming it and causing ingrown toenail problems)

• Always try your best to keep your feet as clean and dry as possible

• Try to wear roomy shoes that won't cramp or hurt your feet and toes

• Keeping your feet in warm water and soaking it may help to heal up the toenails

• Keep a small piece of cotton between the toenail and the skin which is getting affected by the nail (also maintain a small distance from the toenail to the skin)

• Wash the wound with germ antiseptic such as Dettol to lessen the chances of a swollen wound
